SELOC Introductory Event - Leverhulme Park

E-mail Print

Ross on OrangeDue to clashes with other fixtures, we expected this would be a low turnout event. However, the select few who came along enjoyed a warm day seeing Leverhulme at its summer best as a busy sports park. Recent previous events here had been held in thick fog and then bitter cold and rain.

Ross has moved up to Orange and was vying with Wendy until the final control.

We were pleased to be able to use some courses that had been developed by Dave and Harry Anderton at an introductory planning workshop on a SELOC Monday club night.

Ed Mellor had checked these and added his own mark with the Light Green course, which started with a re-entrant in the deep vegetation of the steeply sloping wood. We had made the right move in changing this month's event to the more open Leverhulme Park as such summer growth ruled out the original choice of venue at nearby Darcy Lever.

Thanks to Eric, Wendy and Paul B for helping on the day. While putting out my share of the controls, I succumbed to tangled wire syndrome and the job took rather longer than hoped. Eric is trying out options for a better storage model for the stakes and wires to prevent such difficulties in future.

Unfortunately, the system of wires and padlocks to secure the SportIdent control boxes is fallible and we have lost one unit at this event. I had not noticed Ed's tag at a path junction and secured the box to a tall post. It seems someone has gone to the trouble of somehow throwing the entire stake, kite, wire, padlock and box combo high enough to clear the top of the post and removed it.
