MDOC Town & Country Weekend, Mark Sammon

Print

Having only done one Regional event I have had my sights on the Town & Country weekend for a month or so. I enjoy the bigger events with the longer courses and a good challenge! Along with this I have only had 1 qualifying entry on the BOF rankings so I’m also keen to get 6 Regional/National events under my belt to get a ranking!

Saturday – Macclesfield Forest
Held in the North part of the forest the course was challenging as I foolishly turned up with shorts on (It was hot!).

SELOC supported the event with Beryl Blackhall, Melody Thompson, Fran Heron, Alan Heron & Kev Latham putting out the controls, and manning the start and finish sites. Pete Lomas from MDOC put on the "Naughty numbers" game to keep the competitors occupied until the prize giving. Hamish Willis from PFO organised and planned the event.

5 schools entered 3 teams each with each team being a pair of year 5 or year 6 pupils. Medals were awarded for the first three schools and the first three pairs.

SELOC Introductory Event - Leverhulme Park

Print

Ross on OrangeDue to clashes with other fixtures, we expected this would be a low turnout event. However, the select few who came along enjoyed a warm day seeing Leverhulme at its summer best as a busy sports park. Recent previous events here had been held in thick fog and then bitter cold and rain.

Ross has moved up to Orange and was vying with Wendy until the final control.

We were pleased to be able to use some courses that had been developed by Dave and Harry Anderton at an introductory planning workshop on a SELOC Monday club night.

Bury Primary Schools Results

Print

On Tuesday 15th June Bury Primary schools held their first inter school orienteering competition, thanks to the efforts of Janet Rashleigh the SSCO who worked hard to get the schools to compete at Burrs Country Park. 5 schools took part with 50 children completing the course. The children really enjoyed the experience on a very pleasant summers late afternoon and although some of them struggled with the navigation, by having helpers around the area none got too lost. The winning school Summerseat will now go forward to the county final to be held at Tandle Hill in July.

This is the first time that Greater Manchester has held a county final orienteering competition and is being seen as a trial run for an inter county competition to be held across the northwest in the next year or so.

I would like to thank Janet for getting the schools to take part and all the members of SELOC who have on a number of occasions helped at inter schools competitions this year and without whom I wouldn't be able to run the competition.

Blisco Regional Event - (Updated 18/05/10)

Print

With clouds on the peaks that promised to lift, a trove of SELOC-ites converged on the Langdale Valley for the LOC Regional Pike O’Blisco event. An early registration for this event was required (depending on your start time) due to the start on most of the courses being some 1.5km from registration and about 350m up the path to the Blisco summit. The trek to the start made for a good warm up though.

With plenty of courses on offer we had entrants in many categories.
