Organiser/planner/controller comments:

By early Christmas Eve, it was becoming clear that the pavements around Ed Mellor’s new Street area of Lostock (West Bolton) might not be clear of snow and ice by today, so a contingency plan was formed. Moss Bank Park had a deep layer of soft snow and relatively few hazards, so the idea of a short relay making the most of the permanent posts was born. I hope you enjoyed the result a couple of days later!

This was a relay of 3 laps for one, two or 3-person teams, with the laps A, B and C being completely different but as close to each other as possible in terms of ‘straight line’ course distance. As teams were to complete the laps in different orders, the mass start saw first legs runners scatter in at least 3 directions. My apologies for one slightly late start, as I had misunderstood the message that Cath was on her way! I was temporarily concerned that the last-minute influx from the warmth of the car park had exceeded the pre-printed control card numbers. Fortunately, having had to resort to inkjet printing due to a problem with the SELOC laser, we were able to bag sufficient maps for the later legs without getting them wet as the sleet swept briefly in!

As the first leg runners returned, I breathed more easily as the temporary marker I had just placed for the missing post M had been found along with all the other controls. I was also pleased to see sledges in use on the adjacent hill as I had specifically included them on the risk assessment! However, there is no evidence to support the rumour that Neil achieved his fastest laps by sledging down the hill.

As the recording didn’t extend to the order in which laps A, B and C were taken, the results as presented below are purely in terms of Lap 1, Lap 2 and Lap 3. Hopefully, this provides some entertaining comparisons in the spread of fastest laps.

We were delighted to welcome a good number of guests to work up an appetite with us prior to the very well-attended SELOC Christmas lunch and hope we will see you  all back again soon.. Ed’s fully planned event remains a treat for another day!

Thanks to all the team who helped to put this on today - Ed, Caroline, Stephen, Joan, Fran and Jen.

Best wishes

   Paul Turner

N.B. There was not a single mis-punch using the technology of pre-printed control cards and pencils to copy the post symbols and even such subtleties as the GMOA horizontal or vertical rounded squares were captured quite consistently.  However, I think several people did learn something as to the benefits of carrying a back-up pencil.
