Unfortunately, we have taken the decision to postpone the event for safety reasons.<\/h2>\n

The storm last weekend has meant a closure of part of the park affecting the technical course and the weather this weekend would make it very wet, windy and miserable!<\/h2>\n

It will be rearranged so look out for more information!<\/h2>\n

The third event in the 2020 Saturday series<\/strong> will take place on 15th February 2020 at Alexandra Park.<\/p>\n

These local Saturday afternoon events are ideal for newcomers to the sport, as well as offering a sprint course for more established orienteers.<\/p>\n

Alexandra Park is a Victorian town park, which was built by the people of Oldham during the cotton famine sparked by the American Civil War, which prevented the export of raw cotton from America to Oldham. Small areas of clough woodland can be found at the south eastern end of the park.<\/p>\n

Location:<\/strong>\u00a0Kings Road, Oldham, OL8 2AX. Grid Ref SD 929 043.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration:<\/strong> 1130-1300 at the Boathouse Cafe a short walk (less than 5 minutes) from the car park (follow signs)<\/p>\n

Starts: <\/strong>1200-1400.<\/p>\n

Entry Fee:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a34 for adults, \u00a32 juniors, SI card hire is free (though there is a charge for lost cards)<\/p>\n

Courses\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

As usual, there will a choice of three courses:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Yellow<\/strong> (ideal for newcomers and younger juniors)<\/li>\n
  • Orange<\/strong> (slightly longer and slightly more tricky navigation, ideal for older juniors and adults new to the sport)<\/li>\n
  • Two Part Sprint\u00a0<\/b>(a bit longer and split into two parts with lots of short legs and route choice requiring quick thinking and close attention to the map)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The start is near the caf\u00e9 so a great opportunity for post-run refreshment!<\/p>\n

    New to orienteering?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    It’s a trail run (and often an off-trail run!) with a difference – an orienteering race doesn’t follow a set route. Instead you have to visit a series of checkpoints and register each one with an electronic timing chip. The checkpoints are marked by flags on the ground and may be along paths, earth banks, streams or anywhere in the woods or around the woods. The challenge is to race between each one, choosing your own route between the checkpoints, using a special orienteering map (which you get to keep too).
