SELOC Successes
Biggest turnout of SELOC members was naturally at our own Chadderton Hall Park event on Saturday, where Kath Etherden and Caroline Barcham squeezed some interesting courses out of a small area. Competitors were probably quite glad it was only a small area as the heat of the day made for difficult running conditions. But that doesn’t seem to have deterred Peter Brooke from taking yet another win, this time on the Technical course, nor Adam Thetford whose 2nd place on Orange course suggests he’s now very much at home on a longer, slightly more difficult, course. Good results on Orange too from new members Colin Peel in 12th spot and Andrea Gregory in 13th. Best result on Yellow came from W1 Elsie Driver in 4th, just ahead of W4 Thea Brooke, both with a little help from Mum and Dad. Full results are on the website.
The other event to pull in a good crop of SELOC members was the last in PFO’s midweek score series, at Tockholes on Wednesday evening. On the Maxi option, Joe Mercer seems to have surprised the planners with a clean sweep of all controls and to have done it with more than 3 minutes to spare, comfortably taking top spot. Steve Wilson was in 2nd but didn’t make full use of his allowed time – unlike Michael Hood (6th), Matt Driver (9th) and Peter Brooke (12th) who all incurred substantial penalty points for a late return – sounds like the planners had sited the finish near the road at the top of the steep slopes and caught them out in the final stages. In the overall series, only Peter Brooke fitted in enough runs to make an impact with a very creditable 2nd place in the Maxi standings, just 1 point off the top spot.
Upcoming Events
We have the next in SELOC’s Saturday Series at Queen’s Park in Heywood on Saturday 6 July with the final one at Tandle Hill country park in Oldham the following Saturday, 13 July. More details on the website, but both should be excellent events in parks with contours.
Tuesday 2 July sees the last chance to gain points in SROC’s summer sprint series with what promises to be an excellent event around the campus of Lancaster University. On Wednesday there’s an LOC middle distance race on the dunes at Haverigg or a sprint from AIRE near Leeds, then a midweek event from MDOC at Alderley Edge on Thursday 4 July. AIRE have a busy week as they then have a Yorkshire Urban League event at Baildon, on the north side of Bradford on Saturday 6th
Into the following week, DEE stage the next in their summer series on Tuesday 9 July, near Wrexham. Then on Wednesday, it could be a choice between another in LOC’s series of middle distance races, this time up on the top of the Kirkstone Pass, MDOC’s next Countryside Score event near New Mills or an AIRE sprint near Leeds. Come the weekend, NN have an urban race in the attractive Yorkshire town of Richmond on Sunday 14 July.
Your next chance to bag some SELOC club league points comes the weekend after that, at EPOC’s urban races in Mytholmroyd (Saturday 20July) and Hebden Bridge (Sunday 21st).
