SELOC History

South East Lancashire Orienteering Club (SELOC) is one of the oldest clubs in England, formed in 1965 as the sport was established in the country. It still plays an active part today as part of the of the North West Orienteering Association and British Orienteering.

Members are drawn from across the towns of north of Manchester, from Oldham and Rochdale in the east, through Bury and Bolton to Wigan in the west. A hardcore of members will travel around the country to find the best events each weekend but others prefer to concentrate on more local activities even if it means they don’t manage to compete quite as often. With the good local travel links there is a wide range of fixtures accessible within reasonable travelling distance of our catchment area.

The club itself put on a number of events each year, ranging from a regional event, attended by orienteer from around the North and beyond, through to our regular introductory local events. These are aimed generally at new orienteers, with training and support available, but also providing a technical run for anyone. The club has also staged some major national events both traditional orienteering and also Urban events.

Overall, we are a small but friendly club that is always ready to welcome newcomers to the sport and to guide them in their initial steps until they too get the orienteering bug- and start looking at the countryside and urban environment around them in a whole new different way!
