SELOC Successes

A selection of events on offer this week, though by far the most popular amongst SELOC members was the second in SROC’s Night Street League on Wednesday even though up at Heysham, near Morecambe. Results haven’t yet been posted (it can take a long time when they have to be done manually) so can’t tell you much about how everyone did. But the massive bonfire and funfair that the locals laid on added a new challenge of battling the throngs to find a number on a substation, so all good fun.Main event of the weekend was MDOC’s Twin Peak. Stephen Richards was our only competitor at Saturday’s event in very tough terrain at Errwood, in the upper Goyt Valley near Whaley Bridge. His preparations for the coming night-O season paid off with a creditable 11th place on the Short Blue course (2ndM65) and no apparent injury worries, so fingers crossed.MDOC then gave a totally different environment on Sunday with an urban event in Stockport, using an extended map to the west. Paul Turner took the opportunity to run up on the Men’s Open course as it wasn’t a race that counted in any leagues (MDOC registered it far too late for the NW Urban League) and also took a good result home with 11th place. That wasn’t as good as Matt Driver though, who had a very steady run to take 5th spot, just 1 second off 4th. Steve Round ran MUV but struggled a bit to finish 29th.Meanwhile on Sunday, Josie Greenhalgh trekked up to West Cumberland to run in the 4 hour score class at WCOC’s Copeland Chase, finishing in 32nd place.

Upcoming Events

The next event in SELOC’s Saturday series is this coming weekend, 16 November, amongst the industrial archaeology at the Burrs Country Park just outside Bury town centre. Information is on the website. We also have a Tuesday series going with Age Concern Bolton, where the last event is in Leverhulme Park on 12 November, if anyone can make it.Also on Tuesday is MDOC’s Night Street League event at Heaviley, Stockport. LOC have the second in their night urban event series at Ulverston on Wednesday night. It looks to be a conventional urban race with just Long and Short courses available, best 4 results of 6 events to count in the series. Some may wish to give it a go as their midweek entertainment rather than battle the rush hour traffic to get to Stockport on Tuesday. Last starts at LOC are at 18.30 though, which may be difficult to make for many.The weekend sees this winter’s North West Night League, sponsored by Bright Bike Lights, get under way with SROC hosting in the woods of Arnside Knott on Saturday night, 16 November. SELOC will also have competitors heading all the way to SE England for the British Schools Championships near Slough on Sunday. A little nearer home on Sunday will be events from SYO on Bowden Housesteads near Sheffield or a West Midlands League event on the picturesque slopes of Long Mynd in Shropshire.
